The Festival
In 2004, in cooperation with the Kinopolis group, the Asia Filmfest was launched in Munich for the first time by its founders Manuel Ewald and Armin Schmidt. With an annual increase in attendance of more than 10%, it has grown to become the largest Asian film festival in Germany.

As an audience magnet for Asians, Asia lovers, and film fans in general, the Asia Filmfest not only offers its visitors the opportunity to experience the latest trends of creative filmmaking in today's Asia, but also and above all a varied selection of products from the areas of film, art, culture, and entertainment. So far, the Asia Filmfest has recorded more than 50,000 visitors.

In a friendly and relaxed festival atmosphere, for a duration of eleven days, each year more than 50 new films are shown, including retrospectives of significant directors (2007 Kim Ki-duk, 2006 Johnnie To, 2005 John Woo). Most films are presented as German premieres, some as European and World premieres. The featured productions are mainly from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan.

Many of today's widely known film highlights of and guideposts for new Asian cinema have celebrated their premieres at the Asia Filmfest. These include films such as ASHES OF TIME REDUX, CJ7, TOKYO!, THE WARLORDS, SPARROW, DREAM, FEARLESS, THE HOST, VEXILLE, TRIANGLE, THE CHINESE BOTANIST'S DAUGHTERS, EXILED, SHINOBI, RE-CYCLE, THE HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS and ONG-BAK.

The Asia Filmfest strives to present the entire bandwidth and vitality of Asian cinema, whereas its main focus lies on aesthetic quality. Apart from the most highly praised and successful Asian film releases, you may here also discover films which only receive their chance of being bought by German distributors after being featured in the festival.

As a new portal for Asia's film industry in Germany, the Asia Filmfest serves as a distinguished meeting point for about 100 film journalists, well-known Asian creative film talents, media professionals, as well as renowned guests from the film, TV, and home entertainment industry, since Munich is the most important center of film business in Germany.

The wide media presence of the Asia Filmfest ranges from national and international magazines to newspapers, especially also to the internet and German television, as well as to international film festivals and film markets.
